8 Stomach Ache Home Remedies

Health Tips & Tricks, Hello, Healthy! November 15, 2017

The holidays are a time of treating yourself, and sometimes, that means over-indulgence. If you’re guilty of having a stomach ache or two this time of year, you aren’t alone. We’ve all sneakily unbuttoned our pants during Thanksgiving or regretted that third plate at Christmas dinner. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite stomach ache home remedies that quickly ease discomfort. Leave bloating, nausea, and diarrhea behind and enjoy the holidays!

1.) Ginger

Ginger has been a go-to stomach ache home remedy for thousands of years. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and comes in a variety of forms. We prefer sipping on some ginger ale or ginger tea when nausea attacks.

2.) The Ever-Popular BRAT Diet

It’s not just for toddlers! The BRAT Diet stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast — four foods that are bland and gentle on aching stomachs. The fact that they don’t contain salt, spices, or loads of fiber make them the best foods to eat when you’re feeling unwell.

3.) Or, More Specifically, Burnt Toast

While it may be tough to stomach (no pun intended!), burnt toast alleviates the symptoms of an upset stomach. The char on the surface of the bread absorbs the toxins causing your stomach pain, providing quick relief. We suggest adding a little jelly or butter (if you can handle it) to improve the taste.

4.) Peppermint

Peppermint is both a holiday season staple and one of the most delicious stomach ache home remedies. It’s extremely refreshing and is said to relax the muscles of the stomach. For maximum potency, we recommend drinking peppermint tea, but a peppermint candy works as well.

5.) Heat

When you had a sour stomach as a child, you were probably given a heating pad to ease the pain. Heat increases blood flow to the surface of the skin, which can make stomach pain feel less, well, painful. This works best when you’re lying down.

6.) Lemon Tea

Lemon is one of our favorite flavors, and we’re thrilled to have it on our list of stomach ache home remedies. Lemon’s acidity causes your stomach to produce more acid, which boosts your digestion. Add a little lemon juice to hot water (again, heat is key!) and sip slowly.

7.) Yogurt

Dairy on a sour stomach? Sounds weird, right? Consider yogurt’s probiotics. These little live bacteria help with digestive discomfort and give your immune system a much-needed pick-me-up. Non-fat, plain yogurt is your best bet in this case.

8.) Fennel

If you need a home remedy that does it all, look no further than fennel. It cures gas, bloating, nausea, and cramping. You can choose to eat it raw, chew on fennel seeds, or brew a tea. No matter how you take it, you’re on your way to feeling better!
